Dawn Dalyce It's simple. After raising show and protection dogs for over 40 years, I can tell you that behavior is 90% in the genes. Puppies do the behaviors they are bred to do, with zero training, starting at 6 weeks old. That is how breeders can start judging their temperament and ability. Pointers point, trackers track, retrievers retrieve, herding dogs herd, and mauling breeds maul. It's really pretty simple.(if it's genetic how is it that non fighting breed dogs do and have regularly killed pets and humans?)

A friend of mine lost her beloved dog to an attack by a pit bull/mastiff mix last night. This is the second pit bull attack I have been personally involved in this year alone. Sadly, her FB page is loaded with the "it's all how they're raised" comments now. I want to argue it but at the same time I don't want to start a debate on her page as she is completely crushed right now, and I am unsure where she stands on the matter.

  • Jane Shryock Yeah, I have been talking to her in a PM for an hour or so. It definitely saddens and sickens me how these people crawl out of the woodwork to defend these things when someone they claim to care about is hurting so badly because of their (typical) actions.

  • Jane Shryock I have spoken to her in private about the matter. Hoping to see the dog euthanized and compensation given. She is contacting an attorney as well as having contacted the police and animal control.

  • Jane Shryock She is going to press charges and fight this to the end.. just like she fought for the life of her baby. She also suffered injuries as the result of the attack. She's at the doctor now.

  • Carol AshleyEach breed is bred for a specific reason. My Bassets were bred for scent, some are better than others, when it comes to that snooter. When you have a specific type of breeder that breeds for fighting or dog aggressive dogs, these breeders are going to take the puppies that show the most potential and continue that training and quite often these types of breeder actually kill the ones that do not show dog aggression or wanting to fight. Since I have had 1 out of three that did attack another family dog, I can say with complete confidence it is not how they are raised, but the genetics these breeders have bred for over the years (the dog fighters). Not all are bred this way and this is why there is a a small amount of PB that are very sweet, docile and loving....and have never shoen any aggression. But sadly the high percentage are dog and sometimes people aggressive.
