If you can, always put a leash, thin rope, anything but a wide collar, as high up under the neck just under the ears to be effective. Practice this placement on your own dog, or even yourself, as it can be a life saving technique. Also, when confronted with a Pit Bull, do wrap your arms around yourself, but you also want to turn away from the Pit Bull, that simple move is a sign of submission among dogs (I know) and also gives the gripper a more difficult target to maul.

  Jeffrey Sloan normal dogs read and respond to submission signals. On the other hand, pit bulls see submission as an invitation to disembowel the victim.

  Valerie Webber Jeffrey, that is why I threw the "I know" in apprentices. Pit Bulls don't recognize submission as a rule, but it does help to turn away especially if it is one of the less savage of the beasts.
